Teens and Car Accidents

Car accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers in this country. Teenagers are four times more likely to die in an automobile accident than any other age group.

Risk taking and inexperience are two main factors in why teenagers are involved in car crashes, with driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, speeding and driver error contributing to the high rate of accidents as well. In recent years the use of cell phones and a teenagers' affinity for texting have greatly increased the incidence of teenage-involved car accidents.

Statistics reveal that over five thousand teens die in car accidents annually. A very disturbing statistic states that the first six months after receiving a driver's license are the most deadly in a teenagers' life.

Teens are more likely to speed, tailgate and drive while impaired than any other age group and have the lowest rate of seat belt use. Teenagers in your family should be encouraged to wear their seat belts, obey posted speed limits, not drink and drive and save texting and cell phone use for a time when they are not behind the wheel.
